The vision, mission, and objectives of the Academy
Who are the members of the Global Academy?
The Global Academy members are health care practitioners’, policy makers, researchers, civil servants, actors from civil society organisations and members of the media united by their experience and passion for SRHR and the training they have completed. All members of the Academy have graduated from one of the capacity development programmes run by Lund University or have been involved as the course team for these initiatives. All members of the Global Academy have made an active choice to join the Academy and to work towards our joint vision.
Participants have participated in one of the following programmes: The International Training Programme in SRHR, The National Training Programme in SRHR, The capacity development programme in Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Human Rights, and the programme to strengthen multisectoral approaches to organisational capacity in the areas of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. Members can be found in 38 different countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe. The map below shows an overview of these countries.
How did the Global Academy start?
The Global Academy was formed as a direct response to the needs of the participants of the capacity development programmes. These participants expressed a desire to form an organised platform to be able to exchange knowledge and experience of their work with SRHR-related projects, and to further the agenda for improved SRHR globally through locally owned processes.
In 2018 the Swedish Capacity and Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) agreed to fund the development of the Global Academy under a transition period of 4 years. During these four years, the Academy launched and trialled different models for organisation and management and designed and implemented a number of projects in partnership with different organisations and funders.
How is the Global Academy Structured?
The Global Academy is a member organisation overseen by a steering committee. The Steering Committee are elected by members of the Global Academy. Committee members serve for a period of 2 years and may serve a total of two mandate periods. The steering committee consists of a chairperson (elected from among the committee members), and at least two members for each of the working groups: research, innovation, and education. An administrative coordinator will be employed by the Global Academy for a mandate period of 3 years.
