Background: Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is global public health, development, and human rights issue with far-reaching consequences for those who have experienced SGBV, their families, and communities. Despite progress, Ethiopia still has a serious problem with violence against women and girls, which is exacerbated by persisting gender-biased attitudes and practices. The Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) offers capacity-building programs for police, prosecutors, community members, media professionals, and school children to prevent violence against women and girls and has 6 safe houses.
About the project: The project aimed at strengthening the capacity of AWSAD staff and motivating survivors in the safe house on SGBV in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project specifically set out to provide refresher trainings for AWSAD staff on a survivor-centered approach to SGBV and deliver motivational training for survivors in the safe house. The team conducted a study to identify gaps and recommendations at AWSAD.
Results: Service providers got more knowledge and skills on the survivor-centered approach to SGBV response based on the assessment gaps. Survivors at the safe houses were able to share their experiences with the project team. The study also recommended more community awareness on SGBV and safeguarding of survivors and victims.
