Background: The issue of adolescent fertility is important for both health and social reasons. Children born to adolescents mothers are at increased risk of sickness and death. Teenage mothers are more likely to experience adverse pregnancy outcomes and are at higher risk of HIV, STIs, teenage pregnancy, and abortion. They are also more constrained in their ability to pursue educational opportunities than young women who delay childbearing. Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (MCPR) stands at 20% with teenage pregnancy rate at 31%. The Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) Community has registered increased teenage pregnancy and there are limited access to quality youth-friendly SRHR services.
About the project: The project aimed at promoting positive health-seeking behavior, safer sex practices, increasing access and utilization of quality ASRHR services among adolescents. The project also built capacity for service providers in the Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) Community.
Results: 25 parents, 500 students, 6 service providers and approximately 1,000 adolescents registered increased knowledge. Through peer-to-peer learning, 100 adolescents who were the direct beneficiaries reached at least 1,000 peers in the community and in schools with SRHR information. 6 health workers in 3 health facilities got more knowledge of providing Adolescent and youth friendly SRHR services. There was increased access to family planning services in the three health facilities within the ELWA community that is 109 females to 260 females and also 10 males to 29 males respectively from January to December 2021
