Background
Although sexual education is part of the high school curriculum in Nepal, many adolescents lack sufficient knowledge about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The quality of education can differ a lot between private and government schools, which puts many underprivileged young people at risk of sexual and reproductive health problems as they have limited access to both information and health services.
About the project
This project was created to improve the sexual and reproductive health status of the students at Budanilkantha high school in Kathmandu. 18 high school students were selected and trained as peer educators. These students identified the main topics they wanted to focus on, which included adolescent sexual and reproductive health, anatomy, puberty, safe sex, sexuality, sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS and stress management. The peer educators then organized a four-day training for high school students from six different schools and invited experts (doctors, teachers and NGO workers) to talk about other SRHR-related issues.
Results
After this project, Budanilkantha high school has continued to train peer educators on a regular basis and trainings and workshops on adolescent SRHR have become regular events at the school. Going forward, the project team are planning on expanding these activities to high schools in the neighbouring areas.
