Background
Kamuli district has high teenage pregnancy at 23% with Balawoli and Nabwigulu Sub Counties at 32% and 33% respectively (DHIS2, 2018). The high teenage pregnancy in Kamuli district is attributed to; lack of education and information about reproduction, lack of adequate information on sexual reproductive health and adolescent friendly sexual reproductive health services, peer pressure, early sexual exposure, poverty, family background and cultural norms.
About the project
The project set out to empower the young people in Kamuli College with age-appropriate information on sexual reproductive health, build capacity of teachers to offer SRHR information to students in Senior one to Senior six in Kamuli College, map sexual reproductive health service providers and link them to the youth in school who may need the services and establish and operationalize a SRHR club in Kamuli College. The team held one meeting with Kamuli DLG and Municipal Council officials and one with School Administrators, conducted Focus Group Discussions with 680 students and a consultative meeting with teachers on the status of teenage pregnancy, conducted SRHR education sessions among 1,375 students, built capacity of teachers to offer SRHR information and referrals and integrated SRHR issues in activities of the EngenderHealth club.
Results
There is increased knowledge about SRHR among students, increased demand for SRHR information and services by students, Kamuli College has integrated sexuality education sessions in the school curriculum, with sessions held every Tuesday evening, The school has a budget for SRHR services and buys emergency pads for students.
