Background
In Myanmar,70 % of women visiting Women and Girls Centres have experienced domestic violence. Prevalence of lifetime physical and or sexual intimate Partner Violence is 16% and the last 12 months is 11%. 21% of married women suffered intimate partner violence and 37% suffered injuries while 7% suffered severe injuries. Only 22% seek help and 41% neither speak out nor seek help (Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey. There is limited awareness on Domestic and Sexual Violence.
About the project
The project was carried out in two urban and two rural health centres in Nay Pyi Taw. Its aim was to empower women of reproductive age in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Its objectives were to increase the awareness of domestic and sexual violence among women of reproductive age as well as hold community dialogue on domestic and sexual violence among women of reproductive age in Zabuthiri and Ottarathiri townships, Nay Pyi Taw.
Results
112 women and 20 health staff were engaged in the project. There has been increased awareness among health workers in Domestic and Sexual Violence issues, distribution of Domestic and Sexual violence pamphlets developed by ITP team to health centres, continued health talks outreaches to community by health staff, engagements with WIN-WIN organization to provide health talks about gender based violence, collaborations established between health workers, NGOs and MMCWAs to provide GBV related treatment and dissemination of facts about GBV on facebook and the ministry website.
