Background
The number of new HIV cases among sexual minority people has increased threefold since 2016 (NASP, 2016). In spite of ongoing HIV prevention programs for sexual minority people, latest reports showed that consistent usage of condom during anal intercourse was less than 50% among the sexual minority population in Bangladesh (NASP, 2016). Not getting pleasure during sex, trust between partners and unavailability of condoms during sex had come out as some of the causes of non-use of condom among sexual minority people in Bangladesh (NASP, 2016).
About the project
The project goal was to develop a comprehensive peer-led and mHealth based service intervention package to address the sexual and reproductive health concerns (SRHC) and improve the sexual and reproductive health including facilitating safer sex behaviors among sexual minority people in Bangladesh. The ITP team conducted 2 learning sessions among peers, sent 1200 sms through peer based services for awareness on HIV and SRH to 650 clients, held seven meetings with stakeholders, developed a comprehensive intervention package combining traditional peer based approach with mHealth intervention and held one dissemination meeting among stakeholders.
Results
7 Peer Educators and 3 Peer Counselors trained on SRHC, 650 clients getting comprehensive intervention, health services and counselling related to safer sex behaviors through trained peer providers and one platform established in a DIC covering approximately 650 sexual minority people.
