Background
At least 44% of married women experience physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner as highlighted in the Tanzanian demographic and health survey of 2010. Much as there is limited data captured of gender based violence occurrences at Aga khan hospital Dar-es-Salaam, health workers come across cases of women who come for antenatal visits complaining of being violated either physically, mentally, psychologically or sexually by intimate partner or non-partner. For some of them, this results into threatened abortion and sometimes preterm labors.
About the project
The project set out to create awareness on Gender Based Wiolence (GBV) among women of reproductive age attending Antenatal clinic and maternity ward at AKHD Dar es Salaam. The project team developed screening tool to capture GBV information among women visiting antenatal clinic and maternity ward, trained staff to identify and handle victims of GBV through counselling, screening and referrals, conducted a GBV screening exercise among women, made referrals for all GBV survivors to the hospital psychologists and gender specialist, trained 25 health care providers in GBV and established documentation systems of GBV in the maternity ward and antenatal clinic.
Results
21staff acquired knowledge in GBV screening, establishment of a GBV data base, improved documentation of GBV cases, increased awareness of the referral and support system for GBV survivors at police gender desk and legal aid.
