Background
Zimbabwe has an HIV prevalence rate of 12.7%, which cuts across social status, and remains generalized. There is a paucity of information on the status of HIV among people living with disabilities in Zimbabwe and on how the disabled members of the society are accessing HIV Testing Services (HTS). People with hearing and speech impairments find it difficult to access HTS, due to communication barriers with the health workers and community. This has put them at higher risk of HIV infection and it is difficult for them to access HIV related information and services. There is an immediate need for scaled-up HTS. to identify and link people with disabilities whose status is unknown to care and treatment.
About the project
The project set out to empower young people with hearing and speech impairments at Danhiko School to access and utilize HIV Testing Services (HTS) through peer education and skills building in theatre. The team conducted meetings with stakeholders, trained students on theatre using peer education, trained students and teachers on SRH HIV AIDS basic information, conducted theatre performances and 2 HTS provision as well as follow ups and psycho social support with service providers.
