Background
Young people in Uganda face a number of challenges related to their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), especially girls and women. Sexuality education in the school curriculum focuses on the biological aspects of SRHR and neglects key aspects like rights, skills development and gender norms.
About the project
This project was created to provide SRHR knowledge and skills to primary school teachers in Mbarara District, in western Uganda. The project team targeted five schools in the area and trained the teachers on SRHR, to enhance their knowledge and equip them with the skills to give sexuality education to their students. The goal was also to increase the knowledge and awareness regarding SRHR among the pupils at the five different schools.
Results
So far, the project team have trained 25 teachers and five peer educators from the selected schools. They have also developed a training guide, through consultations with stakeholders, and are planning to train more teachers and peer educators in order to roll out the project to other schools.
