Background
In Ethiopia, night school students are among the at risk population and vulnerable to unsafe sex practices leading to STIs, HIV, unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortion as well as exposure to sexual violence and coercion. Night school students are neglected in terms of access to SRH services. More so, there are no interventions tailored to these target groups, for instance, organizing night education programs. Much as Ethiopia owns national strategy for reproductive health, there is no strategy on sexual and reproductive health service and rights for population groups such as these.
About the project
The project therefore aimed at improving access to SRHR information and provide youth friendly SRH services at SPHMMC for Medianalem and General Wingate night school students. The team involved 13 stakeholders, prepared an SRHR training package with Ethiopian Medical Students Society, held discussion groups with students, trained 30 peer educators in SRHR, formed club of 30 members, provided IEC materials on adolescent SRH issues.
Results
Establishment of an SRHR night shift students’ club at Medhanialem School, 200 IEC materials have been distributed in the schools, the clinic is providing a 24 hour SRH service and 47 students from these two night schools have sought SRH service at the youth friendly clinic at SPHMMC. There was improvement (from the baseline) in knowledge of SRHR issues. The trained peer educators would be conducting the SRHR training in the selected schools. 7 stakeholders accepted the project.
