Background
In Sudan there is a massive gap in knowledge about sex and sexuality. Conversations, knowledge and questions regarding sex are only held in private, and with discretion. Myths and misconceptions discouraging the practice of safe sex and use of contraception among youth are especially worrying and have contributed to spread of STIs and unintended pregnancies. Unfortunately, civil society actors overlook the need for sex and sexuality education, therefore there are few alternative resources that provide accurate scientific and or youth friendly information. Using an online platform to provide sexuality education makes it an ideal channel to reach individuals especially the internet users and young people.
About the project
The project aimed at creating an alternative and credible source of sex and sexuality information for Sudanese youth. The project team conducted an online survey via social media, created an interactive secure digital platform with anonymous chat rooms to provide information and correct misconceptions on topics regarding sex and sexuality including Intimacy and Eroticism, Sexual behaviours and acts, Sexual pleasure, Healthy relationships, STI/Ds and Sexual and Gender identity, created social media platforms on Facebook and Twitter under the name gẖwysẖẗ” with the logo and were connected to chat rooms for mobilization and awareness raising, moderated discussions in the chatrooms once a month for 2 hours and provided monthly blogs on sexuality education.
Results
Online audiences between 23 to 35 years are participating on the online platforms. In only 10 days of opening the social media accounts, more than 75 people responded. More than 10 people entered the first discussion chatroom.
