Background
According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KD HS) of 2014, approximately 45 % of women aged 19 – 45 years’ experience some form of physical, psychological or sexual violence in Kenya. Pumwani maternity hospital is a Nairobi city County referral hospital with a key mandate in reproductive health. It has a target catchment population of 69,650 of women aged 15 – 49 years which translates to an at risk population of 31,342.5. A special concern is with the immigrant Somali refugees who are within the hospitals catchment area during their transition. The Somali community has documented high early marriage rate and the practice of female genital mutilation. By increasing awareness and improving our staff knowledge and skills on GBV, the change project team hoped to improve utilization of Pumwani Maternity Hospital drop in center for Gender Based Violence (GBV) victims
About the project
The project aimed at creating awareness on GBV services offered at PMH, create a response team for the victims of GBV, establish a reporting system and linkages with other care providers. 375 staff members were trained.
Results
70% of the hospital staff a majority 72% being clinical staff got more knowledge in GBV response, more 38 community health volunteers and GBV defenders were trained, establishment and expansion of Tumaini GBV response center run by two staff, use of reporting tools for cases, and development of an investment plan to establish a fully-fledged 24-hour center
