Background
Tanzania has total population of 51.6 million of which 44% comprise of the youth. A key SRHR challenged faced by the youth is unwanted teenage pregnancies; with an adolescent fertility rate of 27% (TDHS,2015). School-based comprehensive sexual education (CSE) has shown to help the youth recognize and advert from these risks. This helps to postponed sexual debut, promote abstinence, increase the use of contraceptives and lower the number of unwanted teenage pregnancies that could result in unsafe abortions and school dropouts.
About the project
The overall aim of the project was to create awareness on SRHR among youth in secondary schools in Dar-es-Salaam, Arusha and Moshi regions so as to reduce the adverse outcomes resulting from poor SRHR knowledge. Having obtained introductory letters from the District Education Officer and consent of religious leaders, the team selected 10 secondary schools, conducted an assessment on SRHR knowledge among the students. 1818 students were informed of youth SRHR services.
Results
Youth clinics have been initiated and 2 youth camps were organized at Aga Khan Hospital (AKH) and Sali International Hospital (SIH) respectively. 120 youth participated; 100 youth at AKH and 20 at SIH. The team plans to host 3-4 youth camps annually. At SIH a youth package was created covering some laboratory investigations, including STI screening and free medical consultation and counseling.
