Background
There is limited knowledge in sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) among university students in Cambodia. The university selected for the project was the technical School for Medical Care (TSMC) because it was the only public university in Phnom Penh offering degree in health science. Even so, the technical School for Medical Care Laboratory Technicians were the only group at TSMC who had no SRHRs subjects in their curriculum; this limited their uptake of SRHR services at available centres.
About the project
The project aimed at increasing knowledge of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights among 30 laboratory technician students in year one at TMSC and hence use publically available health care services at Referral Hospital and Health Center. An SRHR knowledge assessment was conducted from which topics were selected. A pre-training and post-training were carried out among 30 students. The project solicited the active participation of TMSC rector and principle and established linkages between TSMC and available SRHR youth friendly service provision center and Marie-stopes organization to provide SRH services to students.
Results
There was an increase in SRHR awareness. One student used contraceptives after being provided education and 4 students consulted STI at Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital nearby TSMC. 6 students volunteered with Marie Stopes to share information with other students via peer education. The Ministry of Health was to review the curriculum to include SRHR for the Laboratory Technicians’ Curriculum.
