Background
South Sudan is committed to combating SGBV, and has established policies promoting gender and sexual reproductive health and rights. However, implementation of policies continues to lag behind. This not only undermines young peoples’ access to information and SRHR services, but it robes them the ability to know their sexuality, family planning and youth friendly services.
About the project
The project aimed at increasing knowledge of SGBV and HIV/AIDS among young people and improve preparedness of key stakeholders in dealing with youth survivors of SGBV in Juba Municipality. The project team held 13 introductory meetings among stakeholders, conducted pre assessments among 15 teachers and 25 students on KAP of SGBV and HIV/AIDS, sensitized 25 students on HIV/AIDS and SGBV prevention and response, conducted 2 trainings among 60 representatives from security, CSOs, lawyers, media on SGBV, sensitized 1,290 participants on SGBV, distributed 500 fliers on world AIDS day, sensitized 150 UN police and peace keepers on SGBV, conducted 2 radio talk shows on SGBV and HIV/AIDS and sensitized 1500 people on the need to end harmful traditional practices
Results
Increased knowledge and change of attitude among 40 teachers and students towards SGBV and HIV/AIDS prevention and response, 200 students more aware of HIV/AIDS and SGBV prevention and response, 150 media experts and 150 uniformed forces more aware of SGBV issues with recommendations submitted to review gender biased laws.
