Background
Men who have sex with men (MSM) have limited access to sexual health services in Bangladesh, due to a number of structural reasons. A study from 2016 showed that 24% of male sex workers (MSW) in Dhaka had been subjected to violence and that only 36% of MSM had comprehensive knowledge about HIV.
About the project
This project was created to improve the sexual health among MSM at a drop-in health center in Dakshinkhan, Dhaka. By increasing the knowledge of sexual health among MSM and enhancing the capacity of the staff, the project team enabled the health centre to meet the sexual health needs of their MSM clients. In addition to this, they also focused on increasing the access to family planning services for the female sex partners of the MSM clients at the drop-in centre.
Results
Six months into the project, 45 MSM and 18 staff at the drop-in centre had been trained on sexual health issues. The project team also involved peer educators, who conducted 1350 one-on-one sessions on sexual health with men who have sex with men. 74368 condoms and 350 educational materials on SRHR were distributed to the target group. Lastly, the project team have established referral mechanisms between the drop-in centre and two sexual and reproductive health service providers in Dhaka.
