Background
South Sudan has high rates of sexual violence among women and girls. The Gender Based Violence Information Management System report (2018) shows that out of the 3,350 GBV cases reported, 37% were attributed to sexual violence. There are negative physical and mental effects of rape and sexual assaults on survivors hence medical response as a life – saving measure is critical. However, there is no systematic follow up, collaboration and mentoring in the community to enable reporting GBV cases.
About the project
The project set out to contribute to increased gender awareness, consciousness and practice amongst program implementers, staff, partners and stakeholders, enhance application of gender mainstreaming and promote the empowerment of women and girls through implementation of health programs, strengthen health sector/GBV programming, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and improve understanding of sexual and gender based violence and the available services. Therefore, the ITP team trained 30 health care providers in gender and SRH issues, conducted one dialogue session on GBV awareness among community leaders, women and men and one Faith Based Organization, conducted one Gender based violence awareness session at High school for Youth and held one radio talk show about GBV.
Results
30 health care providers have more knowledge on gender and SRH issues, community leaders and faith based organizations are more aware of their roles in addressing SGBV and sustainability plans to engage different sectors are under way.
