Background
The project addresses the high HIV prevalence rates among Men who have Sex with Men and Trans Women. One study conducted by Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) revealed that at least 23.5% of the MSM community is HIV positive. Healthcare services and workers are less equipped to deal with men who have sex with men and transgender women.
About the project
The project goal was to increase uptake of HIV testing services among MSM and Transwomen. Activities conducted were 10 community sensitizations reaching more than 420 MSM and Transwomen , 105 MSM and Transwomen screened and tested for HIV, 33 MSM initiated on PrEP and retained for months 3 and 6, 4 transwoman initiated on PrEP and retained for months 3 and 6, 3 training workshops for Healthcare Providers on KP Friendly service provision reaching to 120 HCP, 4 facility based HCP sensitizations reaching 48 Health Care Providers, revision and modification of Ministry of Health data collection tools (HIV Testing and PrEP registers) to capture gender and sexual orientation data for the 2 targeted clinics.
Results
420 health care workers trained in provision of key population friendly services by the Ministry of Health, GALZ and Pangaea Zimbabwe AIDS Trust, adoption of HIV testing and PrEP collection tools at national level and two health facilities now providing HIV Testing Services to key populations.
