Background
Due to lack of awareness, peer pressure, limited access to sexual reproductive health services and social economic pressures, many young people are faced with risky behaviors including early sexual debut, having multiple sex partners, and non-use of condoms. This exposes them to many health problems such as acquiring STIs, HIV and early and unintended pregnancies.
About the project
The project aimed at reducing the incidence of STIs and HIV at Evelyn Hone college by the end of 2019. This was done by improving accessibility to condoms, increasing awareness of STI and HIV and counselling services and ensuring availability of the minimum student health services platform. Activities included establishment of a student’s safe space with the SRH supplies supply, Installation of eight condom dispensers at hot spots within the college; engagement meetings between students and health care workers, supply of condom disposal bins for male students, creation of linkages between college health staff, students and feeder clinics using the referral system and provision of condoms and IEC Materials through the National AIDS Council.
Results
Increased students accessing condom points and SRH information from safe spaces, increased peer to peer outreach among students and monthly out reaches by the Ministry of Health among students. For sustained provision of SRH services, networks have been established with Marie Stopes, SAFAIDS and the Ministries of higher education and health. The project is to be rolled out in Chalimbana University College.
