Background
Namayingo is among the districts with poor sexual and reproductive health among young people. This is shown by high levels of teenage pregnancy, sexual violence, early marriages, contributing to high rates of school drop outs and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
About the project
The project aimed at equipping adolescents (10-19 years) with SRHR knowledge and increase pregnant girls’ access to maternal health care services in Namayingo district. The team conducted a KAP study on SRH in 2 schools, sensitized 39 pregnant adolescent girls on SRH, held a district dialogue among 56 participants on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health, conducted one community dialogue on child protection issues, conducted media engagements, oriented 30 service providers on adolescent friendly SRHR services, documented results of the intervention in two issues of the Ministry of Education quarterly newsletter and provided IECs to 2 schools.
Results
Increase in the number of pregnant girls seeking ANC services in Buyinja and Banda Health Centres from 26 to 278 and 20 to 154 respectively, structural changes including special days (Mondays and Wednesdays) set aside for ANC for adolescent girls in the two health centres and two health workers designated at each facility to handle adolescent health issues, Marie stopes and UNFPA are working now with the Health Facilities. ITP team spearheaded the finalisation of the National School Health Policy. The team contributed to the development of a Training Manual for Teachers on Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools.
