Background
The high occurrences of sexual violence in Myanmar create a big burden and adverse consequences. According to 2017 report from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the rape cases rose by 305 between 2016 and 2017. In 2016, among 1,100 reported rape cases, (670) cases involved teenage girls. Factors influencing sexual violence include poor knowledge of risk factors as well as existing laws and enforcement against sexual violence. Awareness raising is one of the ways to prevent sexual violence.
About the project
The overall aim of the change project was to prevent sexual violence by improving knowledge, and attitudes among teachers and adolescent students through school-based education in Nay Pyi Taw. The team conducted a consultative meeting was with the department of public health, selected two basic education Primary Schools, assessed knowledge and attitude towards sexual violence among students and teachers, conducted education sessions using education booklets, organized 6 advocacy meetings in 6 regions, trained 90 basic health staffs in school-based sexual violence prevention education.
Results
Increase in knowledge of sexual violence among 20 teachers and 83 sixth grade students, increased awareness of attitude of teachers and students towards sexual violence, increased awareness knowledge of teachers and students in response and support to victims of the victims of sexual violence.
