Background
Women in Zimbabwe have a high unmet need for contraception. Long-acting and permanent methods of contraception (LAPMs), such as IUD, implants, male and female sterilization, are efficient but have a low usage in Zimbabwe due to lack of knowledge about the methods and inadequate counseling and services at hospitals and health centres.
About the project
This project was created to increase the uptake of LAPMs among women who’ve recently given birth at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare. In order to achieve this, the project team focused on increasing pregnant women’s knowledge of LAPMs and available service providers. They also addressed common misconceptions about these methods.
Results
300 pregnant women, 40 midwife students, 20 midwives and 80 obstetricians/trainees have been educated on LAPMs. All groups showed a significant knowledge increase by the end of the trainings. Going forward, the trained midwives and midwife students will continue to counsel pregnant women on LAPMs. The project team are also planning to introduce contraception services for women with newborns at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
