Background
Accessing sexual and reproductive health services remains a challenge for young people in Uganda. In Wakiso District, most adolescents are not even aware of their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and the health centres lack youth friendly services.
About the project
This project was created to develop youth friendly health services at Kasangati and Wakiso health centre. The project team established youth corners at each health centre and trained the health workers, peer educators and community volunteers on adolescents’ SRHR. They also met with young people at four different schools and educated them on SRHR. Lastly, the team held meetings with key influencers like the Ministry of Health, the district health team, town council and head teachers at the local schools to advocate for more SRHR services for young people in Kasangati and Wakiso.
Results
By the end of the project, two fully functional youth corners had been established – one at Wakiso health centre and one at Kasangati health centre. Each facility had two focal persons and a total of 19 health workers and 13 peer educators committed to offer their services. Between January and April 2015, 937 young people visited the youth corners, mainly for reasons like STIs/HIV, family planning and need for SRHR information. Other reasons included rape, growth and development, pregnancy, drug abuse and relationships. 1061 students participated in SRHR education at the schools and 32 health workers were trained by the project team on adolescents’ SRHR.
