Background
The project was addressing the limited provision of postpartum, post abortion care and family planning counselling among women using Juba Teaching Hospital, Tambura State Hospital, and Yei State Hospital. This is due to lack of awareness among women and limited engagement of males yet they are key decision makers in women utilizing family planning services.
About the project
The aim of this project was to introduce postpartum/post-abortion care family planning to provide appropriate and accurate information to all women who delivered and had PAC-FP services at Juba Teaching Hospital, Tambura State Hospital and Yei State Hospital. This was done through sensitizing healthcare providers at Juba Teaching Hospital, Tambura, and Yei State Hospitals on how to provide contraceptives during postpartum and post abortion care, providing postpartum/post abortion women with contraceptives and enabling women in postpartum and post abortion care to access different methods of contraceptives.
Results: 15 healthcare providers were trained and sensitized on postpartum family planning. 1658 women were counselled on post abortion/ postpartum family planning contrary to the initial records that showed none. Out of 1373 women that received family planning counselling following delivery during the intervention period, 404 women accepted to receive contraceptives. 285 women received post abortion care, but only 22 (7.7%) received contraception. There was integration of the change project into the existing family planning program.
