Background
Research has revealed that open positive parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive health issues has many positive effects to adolescents’ self-esteem, family and the society. Adolescents who discuss with their parents on sexual and reproductive health issues are more likely to make healthy sexual and reproductive health decisions. Communication about sex and sex-related issues is rarely discussed, this is because it’s considered culturally unacceptable, offensive and when discussed, parents are said to use fear tactics, exaggerate the consequences of sex and give false information.
About the project
The project adopted 6 modules from the comprehensive sexuality project at Mbarara university project that teaches sexual and reproductive health in schools. The modules were adjusted to fit parents. Weekly sessions were held and the modes of teaching were lectures, stories, games, plays, forum theater and value exercises to teach parents how to communicate. Group discussions with parents were held at the end of each session.
