Background
Adolescents have limited access to quality SRHR information and services making them susceptible to risks and unwanted consequences related to lack of quality SRHR education and rights. The Liberia Demographic Health Survey of 2013 showed that, 3 out of every 10 girls are pregnant before the age of 19 years, which contributes to the adolescent death of 177 for every 1000 live births and teenage pregnancy rate of 31%.
About the project
The project aimed at increasing knowledge and access to SRHR information and services for 200 adolescents (10-19 years) in and out of schools within Montserrado County (Liberia). 20 stakeholders were engaged. 60 students were trained as peer educators to provide comprehensive and youth-friendly sexuality education in 12 schools. 35 adolescent girls were equipped with knowledge and skills to make informed sexual decisions and respond to gender based violence. 15 teachers and parents from 12 schools were trained to provide youth-friendly SRHR education and support. 1500 youth were reached through one mass awareness campaign and 500 youth friendly brochures, flyers and booklets on sex and sexuality in partnership with UNFPA. An SRHR youth friendly Facebook page was created for adolescents to learn and share experiences. 12 school-based youth friendly corners were established for adolescents to access reproductive health information and discuss freely without fear.
Results
There is increased knowledge and access to youth-friendly SRHR information and SRHR services among 200 adolescents through school based youth friendly corners, Facebook page and health centers.
