Background
Female Sex Workers (FSWs) in Ethiopia are most exposed to HIV, cervical cancer, STIs, unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortion and situations related with sexual violence and coercion. As a result, prevalence of HIV, STIs & cervical cancer among FSWs is often much higher than the general population. FSWs are largely unaware of the SRH services, safe abortion & management of sexual assault which limits their uptake. There is also limited linkage of different SRHR services among service providers to give referrals to FSWs.
About the project
The project aimed at creating service linkages among health facilities as well as promote awareness of SRHR services among FSWs to increase uptake. The team solicited support of Federal Ministry of Health, Zewditu Memorial Hospital and PSI-E, developed a Referral Linkage Frame Work, trained 61 health workers to handle FSWs, trained 35 FSWs in SRHR and cancer screening in four DICs.
Results
35 FSWs from the four DICs become more aware of SRHR services. 21 health worker provide friendly services for FSWs. 35 FSWs got counseling at the DICs. 28 got cervical cancer screening and treatment services at the Hospital referred from the DICs. 3 FSWs got similar service at Zewditu Memorial Hospital directly (without referral from the DICs). During the sustainability period, 52 FSWs got counseling and cervical cancer screening from the four DICs. 3 FSWs have received Cryo therapy service thus far.
