Background
In Nyeri county Referral hospital, spousal participation in pregnancy, labor and delivery has been lacking despite its public health importance. This is according to the available statistics in the hospital.
Project aim
The project’s aim was to increase the number of male/spouses who are actively involved. The project involved community mobilization and male education on the importance of getting involved in pregnancy, labor and delivery. This was done through invitation cards /love letters printed and sent to the male partners, awareness programs local FM done every Thursday, creating privacy in labor and delivery room using curtains, Micro-teachings done from Monday to Friday at the MCH and in the maternity wing on a daily basis and involvement of voluntary community health workers in male mobilization.
Project Impact
The project has created an impact in the patriarchal society in that; Men are appreciating the concept of being involved in pregnancy, labor and childbirth. They have been able to participate and the numbers are rising with time. In the last nine months, the total number of men who accompanied their partners for the prenatal visit is 658 while 393 men have accompanied their partners to the maternity for child delivery. The younger generation of men is more receptive to the idea of male involvement in pregnancy and child delivery.
