Background
Although manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is a globally accepted surgical method of removing content from the uterus in post abortion care, there are some problems when it comes to establishing MVA use in Myanmar. Negative attitudes of health care providers, doctors’ and midwives’ lack of skills and insufficient supplies of MVA sets are the main reasons for this.
About the project
This project was created to improve post abortion care, by increasing the use of manual vacuum aspiration at Central Women’s Hospital in Yangon, Myanmar. In order to do this, the project team aimed to boost the knowledge and attitudes of health care providers, train the doctors and midwives and provide a sufficient amount of materials and tools needed for MVA use in post abortion care.
Results
MVA use in post abortion care increased significantly after the project and went from 69% in October 2016 to 96% in March 2017. The project evaluation showed that the hospital staff’s scores increased in terms of knowledge, attitude and skills related to MVA use. The number of functioning MVA sets also increased at the hospital, meaning there are now more tools for the medical staff to use.
