Background
Perinatal & maternal mortality is still relatively high in Indonesia. There are many factors associated with poor maternal and neonatal outcome as well as affect the quality of service provided by Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital Jakarta. Members of the labour unit are not involved in evaluation and audit to improve services. This is due to lack of regular meetings in labor ward to evaluate patient management care. The project team therefore created a tool “Maternal & Neonatal Outcome Analysis” administered through an hour of weekly meeting aimed at problem solving to improve maternal and perinatal outcome.
About the project
The main goal was to improve maternal & perinatal outcome in services provided. The project team set out to introduce “Maternal and Perinatal Outcome Analysis” a weekly problem solving meeting to improve quality of care in the hospital. The team also conducted refresher trainings among staff in Post-partum HIV care, Infection prevention, Pre & perioperative, Preterm Kangaroo care and among others.
Results
The hospital instituted one-hour weekly meetings among all labour ward staff, 23 “Maternal & Neonatal Outcome Analysis” were effected until end of October, 2007 and an evaluation of the six-month period was carried out. There was decrease in the number of neonatal infection and decreased maternal morbidity. Patients get more opportunity for early contact with the baby. New skills in the breastfeeding program were enhanced and a positive environment in the work in labor ward was created.
