Background: GBV is one of the most critical threats to the protection and well-being of women and children in South Sudan. Although most political violence abated when the most recent peace agreement was signed in September 2018, conflict-related sexual violence has persisted. Armed men same affiliated with various military groups, continuously attack women and girls who are traveling additionally widespread displacement. Safe houses provide secure accommodation for women and girls who are at risk of or have been subjected to violence. The project therefore aimed at promoting the development of safe homes for all survivors of SGBV at community level. However the same are few in South Sudan.
About the project: The overall objective was to increase access to quality and comprehensive support to survivors of Sexual Gender Based Violence. This was done by advocating for the establishment of safe homes for SGBV survivors at Nyakuron residential area. Activities conducted included awareness-raising workshops, interactive radio and TV talk shows, presentation of an SGBV prevention policy brief and petition to the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare and conducting social media campaigns.
Results: The team conducted 2 radio shows, one social media campaign, and 4 stakeholder meetings with key members of the Ministry of Gender. In addition, the teams engaged church and religious leader (6) as well as members of the special protection unit at the police (8), The final policy brief suggested establishing one new safe home at Nyakuron residential area and created a rapport with community members
