Background
In Indonesia, Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital has a special service for HIV/AIDS patients called POKDISUS serving 793 new HIV infected patients 40 of whom are women seeking care at the obstetrics and gynecology department. Unfortunately, there are still some medics and paramedics who are reluctant to handle HIV cases. Infection prevention is not well applied in giving services to patients. A hand washing survey revealed that, there are only 17.24% of health providers who washed their hands before and after giving service to a patient.
About the project
The change project set out to improve the knowledge on transmission of HIV among health providers and promote the hand washing behaviour for provision of services to HIV positive women. This was aimed at reducing stigma towards HIV/AIDS and prevent transmission of HIV infection among health workers at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital. The team conducted meetings with hospital stakeholders, focus groups to understand behaviours among the health workers and eight trainings sessions among 122 health workers to address stigma and hand washing.
Results
Improvement in handwashing and hand hygiene behavior among midwives and doctors with midwives being more responsive, instituting of a policy in the Operational Procedure Standard of Surgery to remove payment package for HIV patient in the hospital pharmacy.
