Background
Teen pregnancy and motherhood is a major social and health issue in Zambia. There is a high prevalence rate of teenage pregnancies in Kafue district; between 2014- 2016, Mutendere primary school recorded 69 cases while Naboye secondary school had 54 cases. There are three health centres in the area. Teenage pregnancy undermines girls’ human rights and compromises their opportunity to fully realize their social economic potential.
About the project
The project set to reduce teenage pregnancies among adolescent girls in schools in Kansenje Zone of Kafue district in Lusaka Province, Zambia. 2 orientation meetings were held with 14 Health Workers, District Health Director,66 teachers, District Education Secretary and administrators. The team developed monitoring tool to assess access of SRHS from health facilities among adolescents and presented the project findings to stakeholders and Cooperating Partners (Swedish Embassy).
Results
Increased SRHR awareness among 40 girls from Mutendere Primary school and 70 girls from Naboye Secondary school, increased awareness of Comprehensive Sexuality Education and Sexual Reproductive health services among Health workers and teachers, increased referrals of adolescents to the health facilities to get SRH services, increased monitoring of access to ASRHR services by learners and Health service providers visits to the schools using the monitoring tool.
