Background
Sexual education is one of the weakest areas in schools in Myanmar, according to a knowledge achievement survey from 2013. A key factor contributing to this is that teachers lack the capacity and confidence to teach their students about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
About the project
This project was created to improve SRHR education, as part of the life skill education curriculum, in selected schools of Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory in Myanmar. The project team focused on boosting the knowledge and awareness of the teachers, to enhance their skills and enable them to give comprehensive sexuality education to their students.
Results
So far, 130 teachers have been trained and are now able to teach classes on SRHR. 422 adolescent students have been educated on SRHR and the number of sexuality education classes given at the schools has increased. The project evaluations show a significant knowledge increase both for the teachers and the students. In addition to this, the project team worked on raising the awareness of educational officials, including principals and teachers, on the importance of SRHR as part of the life skill education curriculum. So far, this has been successful and the team have seen a positive attitude change towards incorporating SRHR into the life skill education curriculum.
