Background: The project was conducted in slum areas of Kampala city. Urban slums have high rates of sexual violence. Evidence suggests male adolescents were more likely to commit sexual violence against women, which might be explained by their increased number of dating partners and frequency in which they start new relationships. Targeting behavior change and involvement of boys in activities such as reporting and management of sexual violence cases would reduce boys’ perpetration of violence in and out of school, help them to model respect and promote healthy long-lasting sexual relationships among peers through Sports.
About the project: The aim of the project was to use sports as a tool for promotion of consensual sex among urban slum adolescents and consequently prevent the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) among adolescents Aged 15-24 years living in the slums areas of Kampala Central Division. 40 Coaches (15 boys) were trained as mentors to influence young athletes to be the voice in promoting sexual rights.
Results: At least 120 males and 189 female youth got more accurate SRHR information and had increased access to SRHR services. On a daily basis, Kisugu health centre III serves at least 15 adolescents in SRH services compared to 3 before the project. The health centre set aside Thursdays and Saturdays specifically for Adolescent friendly SRHR services with a designated midwife.
