Background
In Nyeri County, youth friendly services are integrated with other general services. The youth, young mothers, and key populations do not feel comfortable seeking services in the existing health facilities due to lack of privacy, confidentiality, attitude of the service providers and the community. The high levels of unmet need for contraception lead to increased risk of maternal mortality, and disproportionately high levels of HIV, drug abuse and gender-based violence.
About the project
Through the project, 940 in school and out of school youth were provided with SRHR information, 40 peer educators in 3 institutions were trained, a standalone Youth friendly services clinic was established, a nurse was oriented for the Youth friendly service clinic on SRHR, a volunteer counsellor was recruited for the clinic, required equipment such as Television and contraceptives in the youth friendly services clinic were availed, 40 health care providers in ASRHR were trained and an adolescents and youth friendly services work plan with the 40 trained health care workers was developed.
Results
1166 adolescents and youth in 4 institutions of higher learning are aware of SRHR, established a WhatsApp group wall for over 200 youth dubbed ‘’Ask me: sexual reproductive health issues’’, set up an active 24-hour helpline (+254 720 754 549) for youth in the clinic, Rware FM) in Nyeri allotted monthly airtime for AYSRHR health talks, 501 youth were using SRHR services in standalone youth clinic.
